Lighting District

The Charlotte County Lighting District maintains and repairs traffic signals, street lights, and other electrical devices, including:

  • All traffic lights within unincorporated Charlotte County (89)
  • Traffic lights via interlocal agreement within the City of Punta Gorda (18)
  • Street lighting fixtures on major Charlotte County roads (1,776)
  • Hazard warning beacons (8)
  • School zone flashing lights (75)
  • South Gulf Cove Boat Lock controls
  • Manchester Waterway Boat Lock Controls
  • Tom Adams Bridge
  • Incident Management Cameras (39)
  • Fire Station Signals (3)
  • Warning Signals (1)
  • Fiber Optic Communications Cable – (75 mile total) - 47 miles for traffic, 28 miles for the IT Department

The Lighting District is also responsible for maintenance and operation of the Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) which currently monitors 87 traffic signals along U.S. 41, Kings Highway, and in the City of Punta Gorda. There are over 47 miles of buried fiber optic cable connecting these signals with the control center. Plans are to include the remainder of Charlotte County's traffic signals by the year 2005.
