TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING The Transportation Engineering Section is responsible for the planning and development of transportation improvements and optimum operation of the County's roadway systems. This includes operation of the Lighting District for design, construction and maintenance of traffic signals and street lights throughout Charlotte County. The Lighting District is responsible for maintenance and operation of the Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) for traffic signals throughout the County. The Section conducts regular studies of the County's roadway systems through traffic counts, speed surveillance, and an extensive traffic crash summary and analysis program. With these tools, professional studies are performed to solve roadway, speeding and intersection problems. Transportation Engineering works with community and civic groups to temporarily close roads for special events. Request for Temporary Closing Form shall be submitted to Charlotte County Public Works at least 60 days prior to the event. Road closures are coordinated with the Sheriff's Office and approved by the Board of County Commissioners. Street signs and markings are produced, installed and maintained by Public Works. Signs, markers and beacons used throughout the County's waterways are also installed and maintained by the Signing and Marking Branch. REPORTING SAFETY CONCERNS To report safety concerns during normal business hours, please call Public Works Department at (941) 575-3600.
