INDIAN SPRING CEMETERY Located off Taylor Road on Indian Spring Cemetery Road in Punta Gorda, along Alligator Creek, this 40-acre cemetery originated in the early 1800's, with the first recorded interment in 1886. Early in this century, it was briefly known as Pineapple River Cemetery. Land for the cemetery was donated to the County by James L. Sandlin, a prominent citizen and member of the Punta Gorda Council. Indian Spring Cemetery was originally surveyed by Albert Gilchrist, who later become governor and is buried there. Charlotte County's history can be traced through over 2,000 burials at this site, many representing the settlers of the area and the ancestors of many local families. There are over 7,000 platted lots at Indian Spring Cemetery, with over 2,500 interments to date. Approximately 1,400 of the unoccupied spaces have been sold, leaving over 3,800 available for purchase. An area identified as "Potter's Field" is available for free adult indigent burials, and a small area known as "Babyland" is available for free infant burials. Indigent burials are arranged through Charlotte County Human Services, 512 Grace Street, Punta Gorda, 941.833.6565.
