In order for a contractor to apply for a building permit or to work in Charlotte County, the contractor must have a valid contractor's license, general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance. This is for EVERY type of contractor. Search for a List of Contractors Capable Of Performing Work
Just because an individual advertises in the phone book or newspaper, does not mean that they hold a contractor's license. Neither the phone company nor the newspapers verify that the contractors are licensed.
Licensed contractors obtain building permits for their work. This work is then required to be inspected by Charlotte County State Certified Building Inspectors which insures the consumer that the contractor has met all local and state building codes.
Charlotte County Code States:
1. Charlotte County Code, Section 3-2-4 states "that this chapter is enacted for the purpose of protecting the public health, safety, morals and general welfare of the people of the county and shall be effective in the unincorporated area of the county."
2. Charlotte County Code, Section 3-2-6(a) states "that it shall be unlawful for any person to engage in the business or act in the capacity of a contractor, or advertise himself as available to engage in the business or act in the capacity of a contractor without first obtaining a certificate of competency or being duly certified by the state". A certificate of competency is a contractor’s license issued by the county or state.
