County Budget Survey Results - The results are in!  Over 1,800 responses were received from our recent survey on County service levels.  The results indicated public support to maintain the current levels of service in almost every category.  The survey is but one tool that will aid the Commissioners in gauging the public's desires in regards to County operations.  The results of the entire survey can be viewed here. The County budget process is on-going and County Commissioners are depending upon citizen input to appropriately address the funding shortfalls expected next fiscal year.

Budget Department Receives Award - Charlotte County has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association.  This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and represents a significant achievement by the organization.

SWINE FLU - There is a lot of talk in the news regarding Swine flu. The Florida Department of Health is actively monitoring the current swine influenza situation in California and Texas. Currently there are no known cases in Florida. Local health officials advise everyone to follow common sense precautions:  Wash your hands, stay home if you are sick, and stay tuned to local news.  For more information visit the web pages of the Charlotte County Health Department.

Comprehensive Plan Update - Charlotte County government’s draft comprehensive plan is available for public review and comment online. The interactive and user-friendly plan, known as Smart Charlotte 2050, is believed to be the first of its kind in Florida. Residents can read every word and chapter (called elements) of the draft plan and submit comments that will be routed directly to county staff. The website also allows residents to read the comments of others, bookmark pages and to sign up to receive notices when changes are made to specified sections.

Smart Charlotte 2050, the county’s comprehensive plan, is intended to provide a blueprint for growth over the next 40 years. In addition to the interactive website, workshops will also be held to solicit public input.  Workshops will be held from 4 – 8 p.m. with presentations at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the following locations:

May 20, 2009 - Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center (South of Punta Gorda at the Caniff Visitor's Center), 10941 Burnt Store Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33955

May 21, 2009 - Cleveland Baptist Church (On the east side of US 17/Duncan Road), 6600 Cleveland Drive, Punta Gorda, FL 33982

Iguana Report - Last year we asked residents to assist in tracking the Green and Spiny-Tailed Iguanas, which can cause extensive harm to the natural ecosystem’s flora and fauna. These locations have been plotted on a map which can be viewed at the Iguana Reporting section of the County website.  The map presents an excellent visual picture of where residents have reported seeing these creatures.

Turtle Nesting Season Begins - Sea turtle season begins May 1st.  Sea Turtles are a protected species and residents (and visitors) are reminded that nests, and turtles, are to remain undisturbed.  During nesting season residents of Manasota Key, Boca Grande, Little Gasparilla, Don Pedro, and Palm Islands must shield their lights from the beach. Artificial lighting on the beach is the number one cause of hatchling disorientation.  For more information visit our Sea Turtle web pages.

Garbage Cart Exchange - Are you a participant in our Once-a-Week automated garbage collection service?  If you would like to exchange the cart you received for a smaller or larger one you can  contact Waste Management at 941.629.1106 or toll free 1.877.567.2974, or fill out a request form online.
