HOT TOPICS

County "Going Green"  - Commissioners recently approved a new program that provides for methane gas collection from the Charlotte County landfill. Garbage decomposing in the landfill naturally creates methane gas which can be collected, processed, and sold to Florida Power & Light. Each year the program is expected to create 3.2 megawatts of electricity; enough to power 2,000 homes.  It is estimated that this project will prevent 6,375 tons of methane per year from being released into the atmosphere, the equivalent of removing 26,000 vehicles from our roads or planting 38,000 acres of forest. This is part of a county initiative to become a “green” community and to reduce our carbon footprint. Over time, the collection of methane gas to be processed into electricity is anticipated to generate approximately $1 million a year, which will be used to support landfill operations.

Goals Set - County Commissioners held a workshop with Roger Baltz, County Administrator, to establish the organization's goals for the upcoming fiscal year. Over the coming months the County will be sharing more details on the goals and our plans to accomplish them.  The goals identified are:

Innovative Trial Program to End - Geo-tubes have generated a lot of comment from Englewood residents over the last few weeks.  These special tubes were installed near Stump Pass, in Englewood, as part of an innovative trial program to preserve the beaches from erosion and reduce the need to dredge the Pass.  Charlotte County was asked to be a host county for the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection’s project.  The DEP has determined that the geo-tubes have not been effective and ordered the County to remove them or face fines.  Area boaters and beach residents had felt that the geo-tubes were successful and had petitioned the Board of County Commissioners to allow them remain. DEP has given the County a final order of removal, which is to take place no later than December 31, 2008.  This date was established by DEP to accommodate turtle and shore bird nesting in the area.

Cost Savings - The County has successfully completed the refinancing of Utility System Refunding Revenue Bonds.  By locking into a new interest rate of 3.94% we will experience a gross savings of $2,823,764 over the term of the bond.
