HOT TOPICS New Commissioner Sworn In - The Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners welcomed its' newest member on November 21 as Richard Loftus took the District 4 seat held for 12 years by out-going commissioner Matt DeBoer. Commissioner Loftus was sworn in by County Judge Wayne Woodard, who serves in the 20th Judicial Circuit. Commissioner Loftus, a long-time County activist who has served on a variety of Advisory Committees, expects communication and managed growth to be the issues that will bring the most challenges. Conservation Charlotte - County voters made it clear that they were willing to pay a bit more in taxes to preserve environmental lands. Residents endorsed the purchase of bonds over 20 years (with the average taxpayer paying approximately $30 per year) with the funds to be designated to purchase marsh and coastal lands, wildlife corridors and other lands that provide habitat for rare or endangered species. The program will be overseen by an advisory board comprised of environmentalists, real estate experts and other interested community leaders. The Board of County Commissioners is currently recruiting members to serve on the Advisory Committee. For information on Committee vacancies contact the Commission Office at 941.743.1500. For general information on the Conservation Charlotte program call 941.764.4360 Diving Well at South County Regional Park - Officials, school and park personnel and local divers met to "Walk the Plank" at the opening reception of the Diving Well and Locker Room at South County Regional Park in Punta Gorda. The diving well, a cooperative effort between Charlotte County and the Charlotte County School Board, was funded by the 2002 Sales Tax Extension funds in the amount of $1.1 million. The facility will become the home for the Charlotte High School diving team and will also be used for scuba lessons (deep water dives) and diving classes. Dive well hours will be Tuesday - Friday noon to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 941.505.8686 for more information. Charlotte Sports Park Renovations Move Forward - Charlotte County has begun negations with Hunt-Mathews-Taylor for architectural services relating to the renovation and expansion of Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte. The renovations are part of the agreement that will bring the Devil Rays spring training to Charlotte County. The County has applied for a State grant that will fund the renovations. The grant awards will be announced in January 2007. Change in Waste Pickup - Residents are reminded that Waste Management will be changing their routes and pick up days may change. Flyers were mailed to homeowners, but if you need to verify your new pick up schedule you can do it on-line. The new pick up schedule begins December 4. Update - The construction contract for the Courthouse
renovations is still under negotiation. The Board of County Commissioners
is expected to address the item at their November 28 meeting.
COMMUNITY EVENTS Symphony of
Trees - Don't miss this great holiday tradition. Hosted by the
Charlotte County Historical Center, the festival features dozens of
holiday trees, wreaths and centerpieces decorated by or for local
non-profit organizations. Each item is available for purchase through a
bidding process, which runs throughout the 10-day festival. The
organizations receive the proceeds from the sale of their individual
entries. Symphony of Trees also offers Santa’s Workshop, where visitors
will find a variety of gift items hand made by local crafters, and a
fabulous raffle. In addition, festival-goers have the important task of
voting for their favorite tree and wreath in the “People’s Choice” awards.
The 16th annual Symphony of Trees festival will be held November 24 -
December 3, 2006 at the Charlotte County Historical Center in Charlotte
Harbor. Festival hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily. Admission is $2.00 for
adults, and $1.00 for children under 12, with admission proceeds
benefiting Charlotte County Historical Center and Museum Society, Inc. For

941/629-7278. Holiday on the Harbor - Charlotte County offers a variety of holiday events from parades to block parties to canal cruises and concerts. Celebrate the season in style. MEETINGS The Board of County Commissioners hold their regular meetings at 9:00 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Land use issues are addressed the third Tuesday of each month.
