JUST ABOVE THE WATER WITH AUTHOR DR. TINA BUCUVALAS
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fl (August 28, 2009) –Charlotte County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources is pleased to announce a Special Saturday Speaker at the Charlotte County Historical located at, 22959 Bayshore Road on beautiful, historic Charlotte Harbor, September 12, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Tina Bucuvalas will discuss the book she co-authored, Just Above the Water: Florida Folk Art, and the significance folk art has played in the state’s cultural history. The book serves as the basis for the Historical Center’s latest exhibit by the same name.
The book Just Above the Water is a comprehensive work profiling over seventy Florida folk artists, including Missionary Mary Proctor, Lucreaty Clark, Kurt Zimmerman, and Purvis Young. Bucuvalas, partnering with Dr. Kristin Congdon, focused on the impact folk artisans played in the state’s diverse social and ethnic heritage. Developed by the Museum of Florida History, this display features 35 Florida folk artists, plus juried works from local folk artists, in collaboration with the Arts & Humanities Council of Charlotte County.
Admission for this event is $ 2.00 for adults and $ 1.00 for children 12 and under. This includes entrance to the Historical Center and its exhibit galleries.
