Human Services Department
Housing Services - Neighborhood Revitalization Program
Background
The Charlotte County Human Services Housing Division has been given the challenge of assisting with the revitalization of the area bounded by U.S. 41, Midway and Conway. It is one of the oldest developed areas in Port Charlotte, and is well located in terms of its close proximity to shopping, restaurants, hospitals, and medical offices. This area has evolved into a very diverse population of senior and young family homeowners and also contains a high percentage of renters. Due in part to post hurricane damage, inadequate insurance coverage, income levels, challenging economic times and absentee landlords, this area is in need of attention and assistance.
Mission
To empower citizens through education, information and resources to become involved and improve conditions in their neighborhoods.
Goals
- To revitalize challenged neighborhoods by working with each neighborhood to determine their distinct issues, assets and resources.
- To preserve and enhance neighborhoods within the County.
- To promote civic pride and responsibility in and among neighbors and neighborhoods.
To facilitate efforts within the NRA, which has more than 7,000 households, five separate sections have been defined. Services and programs are rotated through the different sections.
Our Work
It is our mission to provide the organization and the identification of resources to support a grass roots effort to improve the quality of life for residents of this area. We are in the process of organizing Neighborhood Watch groups, neighborhood organizations, promoting Native Tree planting, neighborhood beautification, a Landlord Organization as well as coordinating neighborhood clean-ups. These programs require cooperation of many Charlotte County businesses, agencies and County entities including, Waste Management, Environmental and Extension Services, Human Services, RSVP Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, Public Works, Community Development, Code Compliance and most importantly, residents and volunteers.
Our current projects are:
- Ongoing neighborhood cleanup program
- Creation of a Landlord Association.
