Battalion: The battalion vehicles are fire department S.U.V. type trucks that are used by the battalion chiefs. Battalion Chiefs command the complement of stations and equipment in their battalions of which Charlotte County Fire-EMS is divided into three. All individual company officers and personnel are under the command of a Battalion Chief. Battalion vehicles carry a minimal assortment of fire and medical equipment as well as all necessary equipment for commanding fire and large rescue scenes. Battalion Chief offices are located at stations 1, 4 and 7. Similar vehicles are also operated by department Deputy Chiefs.
Brush Truck: Brush trucks are four or six wheeled drive off road
trucks that carry 300 or 500 gallon water tanks and pumps that are used
during brush fires. These units are used in areas where the larger and
heavier engines are not able to travel. In Charlotte County we utilize
two brush trucks with a third to enter service sometime in 2009. Brush
units operate out of stations 15 and 16.
Engine: The engine is the apparatus most people recognize as a
true fire truck. In Charlotte County all engines are equipped with 1250
gallons per minute (GPM) pumps and 1000 gallon water tanks. All our engines
carry a large assortment of fire and medical equipment along with complete
extrication packages such as the Jaws of Life rescue tools. Charlotte
County engines carry almost 1200 feet of 5" supply hose, 800 feet of attack
lines and various ground ladders. 8 of our 11 engine companies are ALS
equipped and staffed with a firefighter paramedic. ALS engines are assigned
to stations 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 15, 16.
Marine Unit: Marine units are fire rescue boats that are capable
of both open water related rescues as well as waterborne firefighting.
The department currently operates three marine units. The units carry
a large variety of fire and rescue equipment and navigate with global
positioning equipment or G.P.S. The departments newest unit, Marine-1,
has a built in radar system that is coupled to the G.P.S. system. Marine-1
is berthed in the Gasparilla Mariner with direct access to both the
Peace and Myakka Rivers as well as the Gulf of Mexico. It is capable of pumping 750 gallons of water per minute.
Mobile Command Unit: The Mobile Command Unit is used at major incidents, such as large structure,
large brush fires, and large HazMat scene. It will be utilized on incidents where a long on scene
time in required and/or with multi agency response in deemed necessary. It provides the necessary working
area, condition for command personnel to manage a large emergency incident.
Rescue Unit: The rescue is an ambulance used for
treating and transporting ill and injured patients at the advanced life
support/paramedic level. The departments rescues are staffed with medical
personnel who are also firefighters. The rescues, aside from carrying
all the necessary medical equipment also carry minimal fire equipment
including air packs for the crew and forcible entry tools. In Charlotte
County we presently operate 10 rescues. Rescues operate out of stations
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13 and 14. Rescues 1 & 10 both operate out of
station-1.
Truck: In the fire service a truck refers to apparatus commonly
called ladder or aerial trucks. In Charlotte County we staff and
operate two Trucks. One is a 95' tower ladder. This is a 95' hydraulic
ladder with a large bucket called a platform on the tip. The other is
a 75' hydraulic ladder without a bucket called a straight stick. Trucks
are used for aerial water supply, elevated rescues and ventilation of
roofs during fires. The trucks carry most of the equipment of engines
with a large assortment of equipment for their rescue and ventilation
duties. In addition, Truck-12 also carries a complete extrication package.
The department operates its two truck companies out of station 2 in Murdock
and station 12 in Deep Creek.
