Community Garden at South County Regional Park

The Community Garden in Punta Gorda will be a first of its kind. The garden is located at South County Regional Park and is a collaborative project between Charlotte County Community Services and Team Punta Gorda. This project started over a year ago as a result of a brainstorming session with the Recreation staff that work at South County Regional Park. During the session the staff discussed what they wanted South County Regional Park to be known for. The answers they came up with were; enriching the lives of the community members, cultivating friendships, building a sense of community and attracting community members of all ages. Once that was established staff thought a Community Garden would be the best way to achieve all of those goals.

Once the Community garden was something decided on for the facility/park Community Services staff reached out to a local gardening club that directed them to Team Punta Gorda. From that point forward a Community Garden committee was formed and the idea of a Community Garden became a living, breathing project. Community Services put forward the land, the funding to clear the land and install the fencing. Team Punta Gorda acquired a grant for the project through The Charlotte Community Foundation which will fund the supplies and construction of the handicap accessible bed.

Project completion is scheduled for the beginning of November and a list of interested patrons is already forming. Beds will be available in a 3.5ft x 10ft for $10 a year or 3.5ft x 20ft for $20 a year. Gardeners will also get to work with Master Gardeners to further educate themselves on proper gardening practices and troubleshoot any issues they may be having with their plants, soil, ect. All gardeners will have to participate in a gardening training session prior to planting offered by Charlotte County Extension Services.
