Port Charlotte has been chosen as the location where, for the first time in the United States , two Korean Major League Baseball teams will face off.  The KIA Tigers are a professional baseball team from South Korea , and they are the most successful Korean team, winning nine championships since professional baseball was started in Korea in 1982.  The KIA Tigers are currently holding spring training starting and the public is welcome to watch them in action.  The best viewing times are 10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Charlotte Sports Complex, 2300 El Jobean Road

The first game will be held on February 18, 1:05 p.m. with the KIA Tigers playing against the Hyundai Unicorns.  They are currently scheduled to play the Boston Red Sox on March 6, and other games will be announced later. The return of major league baseball to the Charlotte Sports Park signals yet another positive recovery effort for the county following the storms of 2004, and we urge all county residents to welcome our Korean guests and offer the warm hospitality for which Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf is known.

A Tree-Mendous Give Away - Charlotte County experienced a significant loss of tree canopy as a result of Hurricane Charley.  To assist in re-establishing our tree inventory, the County Extension Service has received a grant ($120,348) from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that is enabling them to offer 6,500 county residents two free trees.  The selection includes native Florida trees, shade trees as well as flowering trees, ranging from 3 to 5 feet tall. The grant requires that "adoptive" homeowners attend a 1 hour workshop to learn how to care for their trees. Various dates are available, but you must sign up in advance. More information and order forms are on the County website:  TREE-MENDOUS Giveaway!
