EXPIRED PERMITS & PERMIT EXTENSIONS CLARIFICATION

Permits
Taken from Section 105.4.1 - Every permit issued shall become invalid unless the work authorized by such permit is commenced within six months after its issuance, or if the work authorized by such permit is suspended or abandoned for a period of six months after the time the work is commenced.
EXPIRED PERMITS
Taken from Section 105.4.1.3 - Permits will expire if a legitimate inspection is not passed within 180 days from a previously passed inspection.
Legitimate inspections do not include partial inspections.
Permits that expire must be renewed in order to commence work and will be assessed the original Building Valuation Fee.
EXTENSION OF PERMITS
Taken from Section 105.3.2 - ….the building official is authorized to grant one or more extensions of time for additional periods not exceeding 90 days each. The extension shall be requested in writing and justifiable cause demonstrated.
It is the Charlotte County Building Construction Service department’s policy to grant up to two (2) 90 day extensions during the application phase of the permits and up to two (2) 90 day extensions during the life of the issued permit BEFORE the permit expires. The extension should be a written request with the reasons for the extension enumerated in the request. There is a $63 fee for the first request and a $100 fee for the second.
EXTENSION INSPECTION PROGRAM (for permits issued prior to September 1, 2007)
The purpose of this additional inspection is to ensure that new structures, that are not going to be completed in the near future, are maintained in a safe and aesthetically pleasing manner to ensure the life safety, health and welfare of Charlotte County citizens.
Permits must be active and all Building Construction Fees paid in full. It is a 6 month program and the fee is $90. Other provisions of the program will also be applied. Projects cannot be worked on during this time and commencement can only be started after notifying the Building Department.
