SIGNS-CLARIFICATION

Monumental and pylon type signs:
Each sign is a system of components that include an in-ground foundation, an above ground support and the sign itself (the sign proper). Per the FBC section 3107, the sign, which is the entire system, shall be designed, constructed and maintained in accordance with this code. Therefore, the sign (the system) shall be certified by a Florida licensed professional engineer to resist loads imposed on the sign (system) by a 130 mph 3-sec gust wind. This can be one engineer or two. The manufacturer of the sign proper shall provide a letter on the sign manufacturer’s letter head, bearing the original embossed seal and signature of a Florida licensed professional engineer certifying the signs conformance with the wind load requirements described above. The drawings for the in-ground foundation and the above ground support shall also bear the original embossed seal and signature of a Florida licensed professional engineer certifying compliance with the Florida building code.

Wall signs:
Wall signs attached to exterior walls of solid masonry, concrete or stone shall be safely and securely attached by means of metal anchors, bolts or expansion screws of not less than 3/8-inch diameter and shall be embedded at least 5 inches. Wood blocks shall not be used for anchorage, except in the case of wall signs attached to buildings with walls of wood. A wall sign shall not be supported by anchorages secured to an unbraced, parapet wall.
